HistoryOn the left bank of the river, about
half-way down the side of the hill on which stands the Château of Saint-Gilles, is the
al-Ajamiya madrassah built in 1365 by Mohamniad
al-Sukkar with the mausoleum of the donor attached. Over the lintel of the principal door
facing west is an engraved dedicatory plaque . It
reads: The construction of this blessed mausoleum was ordered by the pious servant
Mohamrnad, called al-Sukkar (Sugar), may
Allah forgive him! It was finished at the beginning
of the month of Ramadan in the year 766 (May 22,1365). A narrow lane runs
almost for a distance of one hundred yards beneath a vaulted passageway
